국제펜광주 13호 - Greeting

 

『국제펜광주』 제 13호가 나왔다.

광주지역에서 영어대역으로 나오는 잡지는 드물다. 전 작품은 불가능하고 우선 시(시조, 동시)와 수필 작품들에 한한다. 그것도 편집국에서 요청하는 매수를 지킨 작품들만 번역을 한다. 한국인 번역의 경우는 반드시 원어민의 감수를 받는다. 이번에는 전남대학교 영문과에 재직중인 Scott F. 교수님. 어쩐지 부끄럼 없이 책을 내놓게 되는 이유 중의 하나이다. 그러나 안심은 하지 않는다. “부정한 미녀”와 "정숙한 추녀"의 변주 가운데 그저 ‘이해되는 영어’를 선택했을 만큼, 시란 문학이란 우선 '읽기'가 어려워 번역하기는 더 어려운 종이다. 시인과 수필가, 번역자, 감수자 - 세 차원을 오가는 연결에 종사하다보면 한 두달은 머리가 멍했다.

 

수필 번역자 - Denise Suh는 캐나다에서 이메일로만 작업과 통신을 했다. 12호 작업할 때는 전남대학교 언어교육원 "원어민영어회화" 선생님.

책이 보고싶지도 않은지 오프라인 주소도 안 준다.

 

 

 

 

To our Readers 2015!

 

Joyce Carol Oates once defined the act of writing as an art, one that permits humans to transcend the impermanent and participate in their "culture", fulfilling a need that is equal to the drive to procreate. But there have been times in history when writers had their freedom to write taken away from them, mainly by the governments.

Of course, we know that the Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, freedom of worship, and freedom from want etc. but, sometimes there is a sidereal distance between the Constitution and its practice. In the literature field, the freedom to write what we want to write always walks a tightrope, not only because of state power. Today the neoliberal experiments in the free market economy reach an apex and now only the convertible note, money, dominate the public. Who emphasizes moral culture will pass into a proverb. And then, after that tragic 'plagiarism incident' in June this year another painful word 'literature authority' makes us feel small. Because such authority is, if there is any, nothing but the internal evidence of our inadequacies and weaknesses.

Besides, we poets and writers are required to keep ourselves awake against the hedonistic tendencies in this material-dominated world which is exaggerated deftly with pleasure. And pleasure dies at the very moment when it charms us most, as the saying goes.

However, we members of PEN Gwangju, gathered here in this small book, say we participate in our culture.
